last camping weekend of 2009

By Alice on Monday September 28th 2009 at 11:28

We went to Wales for the weekend with Mullins and Liz and Charlie - - it’s the last weekend that most campsites are open before they close for the winter - and it was really sunny (although very cold at night!) and I am ever so slightly sunburnt! On Saturday we went for a surf and Mark & Charlie saw a seal not very far away looking at us - we weren’t sure if the seal thought that jemima was another seal as she was in the sea with us bobbing about! We even got her on a surfboard!!

Jemima also found herself a new green scarf (she’d like to be a model!)....

Me and Jemima had a race to work today along the river - Jemima always wins - even though I’m going as fast as possible on my bike!

Lizzy and the hedgehogs!

By Alice on Thursday September 10th 2009 at 09:48

As a TOP ten seller, ‘The power of spontaneity’ which stars two hedgehogs (with one on a swing), is doing very well indeed…

OVER to Lizzy! - - - - I absolutely LOVE hedgehogs much to Alice’s amusement, who discovered my love for them when I proudly told her I was a member of the British Hedgehog Society.

image

I’ve always been a keen wildlife spotter having grown up on a farm, and enjoying the countryside whenever I can. The joy of seeing hidden nature is a fantastic feeling and my love for hedgehogs started a few years ago, whilst on my way to work a nightshift, I spotted something small wandering across the road in front of me. The road was quiet, so I slowed right down, and much to my shock, I saw a hedgehog wandering aimlessly around in the road with a Macdonalds Mcflurry top stuck on his head. He couldn’t see due to the cone on his head, and the poor little thing was very lucky not to have been squashed by a car. He appeared quite distressed and disorientated. I was astonished at how well stuck the cone was on his head but after a little teasing I was able to remove the mcflurry cone. Inside was the left over ice cream that someone had discarded as litter and a large number of ants who had tempted Mr. hedgehog in there in the first place!! He scurried off into the safe undergrowth at the side of the road as soon as he could see where he was going and I disposed of the litter once I got to work.

My first real experience of watching hedgehogs was when they visited my garden, and I’ve been hooked ever since!

Alice Palace is proud to be supporting the British Hedgehog Society by sending them all our used stamps. To make a donation yourself visit:

Grow your own

By Alice on Thursday September 03rd 2009 at 10:00

Many people are now making a conscious effort to adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, all too aware of the impact our actions can have on the environment. So why not do your bit by creating a vegetable patch or taking on an allotment - it can be highly rewarding!

image

Here at Alice Palace, we are really excited about growing our own veg and we want to inspire and excite you about doing the same thing. This year I’ve grown courgettes and tomatoes and potatoes - and Lizzy has really gone for it with a full on veg patch and has produced courgettes, tomatoes, potatoes (copy cat!), lettuce (mostly for the guins!), carrots (they were incredibly small) and cabbages (which the caterpillars ate!).
