a lovely holiday in Thassos…

By Alice on Thursday 27th May 2010

Mark and I escaped to Thassos for a week and it was LOTS of fun…apparantly our flight was the last one to go before another load of cancellations…

- so we were v. lucky (although we had to set off at 3:30am to get our flight)!

We got a ferry over from the mainland to Thassos island and were accompanied by many hungry seagulls and some very strong winds…

The island is the most northerly and is called the emereld isle as it’s so green all year round - covered with olive trees lower down and pine trees on the higher ground…and is famous for white marble and honey…

On our first day, we hired a little red car (from a man who was very similar to the meercat advert!) and set off on the coastline road that goes round the whole island and went to the market in Prinos to pick up some lunch…and then found our very own beach to eat it!

it was completely beautiful and totally deserted!

..we then stopped at a coastline town called Limenaria to sit in a swing chair and eat a banana split…

...and then we went to my favourite inland village called Theologos…a very beautiful unspoilt place (apparantly v. similar to greece 40 years ago) full of goats wearing bells which you can hear echoing all round the surrounding mountains.

The people living there all had big allotments and were pretty much self-sufficient.

We also met a VERY noisy donkey and some chickens who enjoyed some of our strawberry left overs!

...and we’d travelled round the whole island in one day…stopping on the way back at a tavern called ‘beautiful alice’!
