How did Alice Palace start

By Alice on Friday 31st May 2019

I’ve always loved art and Alice Palace started by following what I love to do - the a levels i picked were the subjects I liked best (art, french and geography) and after a levels i wasn’t sure whether to work with horses, or go to uni and do something arty - so i took a year out and worked full time (living in) at a horsey yard. It was fun, but made me realise that I didn’t want to do it as my proper proper job.

So I did an art foundation course which I really really loved and from there I knew I wanted to do a graphic design degree at uni - that was brilliant fun and I did lots of illustration - and afterwards I did freelance work and part time work as both an illustrator and as a designer until Alice Palace was set up in 2004 and I started selling my illustrations and designs as greeting cards.

I used to get called Alice Palace when I was at school - I love it as my business name; it rhymes, it sounds fun, and people think I work in a palace (I don’t)! It took a while for me to find the courage to go full time into Alice Palace, but as soon as I took the leap I knew it was the right thing. I love running my own creative business… it is a real juggle, but ultimately I get to be my own boss and be there for family life too, win win.Throughout the years, I’ve had invaluable help & advice from my uncle bob (who also runs his own business), and there’s always something new to learn. This June I will have been in business for 15 years, and employed my sister Lizzy for 10 years! Sometimes you need to take a little look at what you’ve achieved and give yourself a pat on the back.
